Painting by Richard Rensberry
Summer Love
We clasped hands and slipped away
with the horses down the lane
into the meadow. Red-winged blackbirds
held chorus in the cattails
where the cattle drank. The creek had a rush
to compliment the laugh of the mallard ducks
and the air was abuzz with dragonflies.
I remember your face freckled and petite
as we knelt to pick orchids and kissed.
We snipped a bouquet to freshen our retreat
cradled in the limbs of an ancient tree; paradise
where we carved our names, sunbathed
naked, satiated and carefree.

Thanks Meredith. It was a gift to my brother and his wife. It hangs on their wall in Northern Michigan where I was once caretaker at the bird sanctuary on the Thunder Bay River.

The awareness of native sanctuary, it seems, breathes.
Thank you for sharing part of the history… Thunder Bay is extraordinary. How wonderful for you to have such an experience (and then share it so well).
All the best, Meredith.
