The Grumpy Poet

Late for Church

I circle the block
like a vulture
red to prey on a red
Mini Cooper. My truck
growls and bucks
from a stressed out clutch
in four wheel drive.

I have never been fond
of going in circles, merry-go-rounds
make me dizzy, arguments
can’t be trusted
and there is always someone
close behind you, even if it’s
yourself.

Sunday
used to be holy,
blessed and generous
in heart
and pocket. Now, the parking
meters run, and the meter
maid is God.
