Snow Birds

The hardwoods
have turned
magical
with their robes of gold,
red and orange.
The apples glow.

The pumpkins
smile
and flicker like ghouls
as the children settle
into desks at school.

Wood smoke whirls
with scented wisps
of smoked fish and brisket
barbecue. The sky
is full of geese and teal
skedaddling south
with a dirge I’ve heard
for sixty years.
