5:00 A.M.
A hint that the day
has begun
are the dove’s
coo from the dawn’s
dark magic
where eyes seek
things not there.
A black bear
approaches invisible
so why pretend.
The deer
are ghosts of old
tree stumps left
to remind us
that our days come numbered.
Among the gatherings
of wrens and warblers
about the yard, some argue
as others taunt, but most
rejoice in singing
as the sky cracks pearly blue
as a robin’s egg.
